Alternative Uses for Manure Manure is not simply an animal waste product, but a potentially valuable commodity. Animal manure has been land applied as a crop fertilizer throughout history. However, new technologies have also made it possible to convert manure into sellable products and as a useable energy source. This can be an especially attractive alternative in areas where land application of manure is limited for one reason or another. Value-added products generated from animal manure can include composted and odor-free fertilizers, soil amendments or feed additives. Energy can be obtained from manure through either combustion, biological conversion (anaerobic digestion), or chemical conversion (to methanol).
