Fuel Spill Prevention

Farm operations usually include the storing of fuel oil, diesel, gasoline, and other fuels and chemicals. Spill prevention and control measures should be included as part of the farm management plan, including procedures for the use and filling of the storage containers. Fuel and chemical storage should be located to minimize the potential for pollution of nearby wellheads or surface waters in the event of a leak or spill. Storage structures should be constructed of materials that are chemically compatible with the substances stored. Secondary containment structures should be designed to hold at least 110 percent of the volume of the largest container. Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasures (SPCC) plans may be required in some cases.
