 *Source Water Protection

Fertilizer and Feed Handling

Efforts should be made to handle feed and fertilizer stocks so that production of unnecessary waste is kept to a minimum. All such material should be stored indoors or in covered areas to avoid contact with precipitation. Procedures for reducing the amount of spilled feed can help reduce potential waste generation as well as save the farm operator money. Good management and maintenance of feeders, watering facilities, feed storage facilities, and associated equipment will help reduce feed waste (USDA, 1999).

Fertilizer type and rates of application should be designed to meet plant requirements but also not to substantially exceed those requirements. Fertilizer and feed storage and mixing facilities should be protected from spills, leaks and infiltration by precipitation. Impermeable floors for storage facilities help to reduce product loss and soil contamination, and secondary containment structures may be used for liquid product storage areas. Handling of fertilizer and feeds should be conducted away from wellheads and surface waters (USEPA, 2001b).
