General Organic Chemical Parameters

Some of the general indicator parameters used in conventional testing for organic chemicals include tests for Total Organic Carbon (TOC), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), and UV absorbance (e.g., at 254 nm). UV absorbance and TOC analyses can be performed in minutes (on-line systems are available), COD takes hours, and BOD takes days. UV absorbance is not a particularly sensitive test for detecting spill events, and TOC is more commonly used for early warning purposes (Grayman et al., 2001).
